Contractor Jobs Are JumpingBy Kim S. Nash | Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 06:03 AM
The way the IT job market looks, becoming a contractor might indeed be the way to go. I've mentioned this kind of career transition before, in the context of what it takes to make the switch from full-time company man (or woman) to independent tech worker. Recently, the people at Dice.com, a job search site, ran some numbers for me that confirm contract work is on the rise.
As of January 2007, the number of contract positions advertised on Dice's site was up 147 percent compared with January 2004, from 13,616 jobs then to 37,781 at the start of this year.
Contract jobs didn't grow as fast as full-time technology positions, which were up 226 percent during that same time period. But still, there's traction there in the independent consultant arena.
